NLarn Spoilers Guide
For players who want hints without losing all the discovery
It avoids going into too much details to preserve the spirit of discovery while helping players understand the game's mechanics and features. And, not least, to avoid frustration.
Game Overview
NLarn is a roguelike game inspired by the classic Larn. The goal of the game is to find a potion to cure your daughter from the illness "dianthroritis" and bring it back home. Time is finite - when you return home, the doctor will tell you how much time is left. In NLarn, time is measured in mobuls. A mobul consists of 100 turns. You can see the number of turns elapsed in the status bar on the right, prefixed with T.
The game consists of a home town, and two dungeons: the Caverns of Larn and the volcano. The potion is hidden inside the volcano, which is unfortunately populated by dragons and demons. To be able to fight the latter, you have to gain experience and wealth by fighting through the caverns. The equipment available in the DND store in town is expensive, but will help you to survive in the volcano long enough to find the potion. To earn money, you can collect gems in the caverns and sell them to the bank. The entrance of the caverns is depicted by the letter O; the shaft leading down to the volcano by the letter I.
The game world is filled with monsters to battle, items to collect, spells to cast, and traps to avoid. Strategy and careful management of resources are key to surviving the depths.
Character and Attributes
Your character possesses several attributes that shape your effectiveness in the game. Strength determines your melee damage and how much weight you can carry. Dexterity affects your accuracy with weapons, your ability to evade attacks, and various skill checks. Constitution influences your maximum hit points and resistance to certain effects. Intelligence governs your ability to learn and cast spells, while Wisdom affects various checks and some spell effects.
At character creation, you can choose from different stat packages that emphasize particular attributes, or accept a random distribution. As you progress, your hit points and mana are displayed prominently on screen, with visual warnings appearing when they run low. Experience is gained by defeating monsters, and leveling up increases your maximum hit points, magic power and combat proficiency.
Combat and Weapons
Combat in NLarn is turn-based. You can wield weapons, ready ammunition and wear armour to defend yourself.
The game features a variety of weapon types including:
- Daggers, short swords, long swords
- Maces, flails, hammers
- Spears, bows, slings
- Unique weapons with special properties
Ranged combat is one of your strongest tools. Bows, slings, and thrown weapons, even thrown potions allow you to damage enemies before they reach you. Unfortunately, some monsters can use ranged weapons, too, or have other ranged attacks such as breaths.
Some weapons can break during combat. This is not just an inconvenience — it can be fatal if it happens mid-fight. Avoid relying on a single weapon, and replace or repair damaged equipment early. Weapon and armour bonuses significantly affect your combat effectiveness.
Different armour types provide varying levels of protection. The weight of armour slows your movement speed, while shields provide additional defense. Be warned that cursed armor sticks to your body and cannot be removed. It usually offers less protection than their uncursed counterparts.
Survival advice
- Avoid fighting multiple enemies at once whenever possible.
- Use terrain: fight in doorways, corridors, or corners.
- Retreat early — most deaths happen because the player waited one turn too long.
- Always carry a readied backup weapon.
Magic System
Magic in NLarn is learned from books found in the dungeon or purchased from the DND store. Each spell has an intelligence requirement that must be met before it can be learned. Reading a book takes time and may grant knowledge of its spell. Casting spells consumes mana, with higher level spells requiring more. Spell casting can fail based on your intelligence and the spell's level, and some spells can be cast repeatedly on the same target for extended effects.

Items and Equipment
Items in NLarn come in many types. Weapons include swords, daggers, maces, spears, and ranged weapons. Armor comes in various forms such as helmets, cloaks, body armor, shields, gauntlets, and boots. Rings provide various bonuses and effects, while amulets are special magical items with powerful properties.
Scrolls are single-use magical items, and potions are consumable liquids with magical effects. Books contain spells that can be learned once read. Gems are valuable items, some with special properties. Containers such as bags and chests allow you to store and organize your items.
Items can have different statuses. Blessed items provide positive effects and are often more powerful. Cursed items have negative effects and can be dangerous. Uncursed items are neutral with no special effects. Items can also become damaged — burnt, corroded, or rusty items are less effective in combat.
Some items have bonuses to hit chance and damage. Unique items have special properties that set them apart. Items can erode over time from environmental effects like fire, acid, or water, though blessed items resist erosion better than others.
Containers can store multiple items and may be trapped with various effects. Items inside containers are protected from some environmental effects, and containers can be nested within each other.
Town and Buildings
The town level serves as a safe area where you can prepare before descending into the dungeon. It contains various shops and services to aid your adventure. Townsfolk provide information, and they may even pick up weapons to fight monsters that enter town.
The Bank allows you to store gold and earn interest, with a branch office also available in the dungeon. The DND Store sells equipment, while the Larn Trading Post allows you to sell items. The School of Larn offers courses to improve your attributes. The Monastery provides healing and other services. Your Home serves as a starting point with storage space for items you wish to keep (yes, the stash).
Altars allow you to pray and gain divine favor. Making donations at altars increases your relation with the gods, which affects certain spells. Higher donations increase the chance of positive outcomes, while desecrating altars will anger your god and decrease your standing. Your godly goodwill is tracked and persists throughout your game.
Fountains can be drunk from for various effects, both positive and negative, or washed at to cleanse certain effects. They may dry up after use. Thrones can be sat upon for various effects, or pillaged for gems, though disturbing them may generate dangerous monsters.
Monsters
Monsters in NLarn are not just obstacles — they are the primary cause of death.
Different monsters require different responses. Some attack in melee, others at range, and some use abilities that can disable or kill you without warning. Some will actively try to keep their distance, making them more dangerous and hard to reach without ranged attacks.
The game features a wide variety of monsters including:
- Animals like rats and snakes
- Humanoids like goblins and orcs
- Undead creatures such as zombies and vampires
- Various types of demons
- Dragons of different colors with unique abilities
- Special creatures like xorns and mimics
Certain enemies deserve special caution:
- Creatures with gaze attacks can affect you from a distance
- Various monsters can destroy your equipment
- Dragons have powerful breath attacks with different damage types
- Some monsters resist specific forms of damage
- Many monsters can pick up and use weapons found in the dungeon.
Charmed creatures, summoned demons, and even townsfolk can fight on your side — but they can also be harmed by your attacks.
Survival advice
- Learn which enemies to avoid — not every fight is winnable.
- Pay attention to resistances; ineffective attacks waste time.
- Be careful when using area attacks near allies.
- If a monster behaves differently (keeps distance, uses ranged attacks), adapt quickly.
Traps and Hazards
Traps come in various types throughout the dungeon. Trap doors cause you to fall through to the level below. Arrow and dart traps fire projectiles at you. Pit traps ensnare you. Sleep gas traps can put you to sleep, while poison traps inflict poisoning. Teleport traps send you to a random location, and mana drain traps reduce your magical energy.
Traps can be triggered by stepping on them, but can also be found on containers. You can attempt to disarm traps using the dedicated command, but when you fail, you'll trigger it!. Your dexterity affects your chance to evade traps, and being burdened increases the chance of triggering them. Dexterity also affects your chance to disarm a trap, so you better simply ignore trapped containers with insufficient dexterity.
Game Mechanics
Movement and exploration are fundamental to NLarn. You can move with the arrow keys or vi-style keys, add running is possible with a direction plus shift. The auto-travel feature allows you to select a target and move toward it automatically, aborted only if interrupted by monsters. You can search for traps, rest to recover hit points.
Inventory management is handled through the inventory screen, accessed with a dedicated key. Items can be equipped, used, or dropped as needed. Auto-pickup can be configured to automatically collect certain item types. The inventory display is organized with categorical headers, and you can jump directly to the first item of any type by pressing its glyph.
Combat actions include attacking with weapons, casting spells, throwing items, firing ranged weapons, and swapping between your primary and secondary weapons. Magic is handled through a spell selection dialog where spells are organized by level and type. Some spells require you to target them at specific monsters or locations.
Character progression comes through gaining experience from defeating monsters. Leveling up increases your maximum hit points, allowing you to survive deeper in the dungeon. You can also improve your attributes by taking courses at the School of Larn.
Saving works both automatically. The game saves your progress when you quit; optionally when you change levels to allow recovering from crashes (even they are not very frequent these days).
Divine System
The godly goodwill system tracks your relationship with the divine. Your actions at altars influence this relationship: making donations increases your standing, while desecrating altars decreases it. Your godly goodwill affects certain spells in the game. With high goodwill, some spells become more powerful, while with low or negative goodwill, spells may behave differently or even backfire, causing unintended effects.
Tips for New Players
Explore slowly. Rushing into unknown areas is one of the fastest ways to die. Always assume something dangerous is just out of sight. Manage your inventory carefully. Being burdened slows you down and increases your risk of triggering traps. Store excess items at home and carry only what you need.
Use the town as a strategic hub. Heal, store items, and prepare before going deeper. Use the environment to your advantage: altars can be prayed at for benefits, and fountains can be drunk from or washed at for various effects.
Learn when to retreat. Most deaths happen because the player stayed one turn too long. If a fight feels uncertain, leave. Use the environment. Doorways ans narrow corridors can keep enemies from surrounding you. Rest when needed to recover hit points between fights.
Be cautious with unidentified items and cursed equipment. When in doubt, use scrolls of identify, altars or the identification service of the trading post to verify safety.
Experiment with different spells to learn which work best in various situations. Pay attention to monster behaviors and resistances, as different strategies work against different creatures.
